The towns

  • Villa La Angostura: on the shore of Nahuel Huapi, known as the "garden of Patagonia" and for its myrtle forest. In winter, Cerro Bayo gets the snow.
  • San Martín de los Andes: on Lake Lácar, near Cerro Chapelco, with the Pil Pil viewpoint and a good food scene.
  • Junín de los Andes: gateway to Lanín National Park, whose volcano reaches 3,776 m, and to areas such as Huechulafquen and Paimún.
  • Villa Traful: a mountain village surrounded by forests, with the turquoise waters of Lake Traful.
  • Villa Pehuenia: the "Swiss village of Patagonia", with araucaria forests and crystal-clear lakes.
  • Caviahue: at the foot of Copahue volcano, with hot springs and snow in winter.

What to do

In spring, summer and autumn: bird watching, photography, trekking, horseback riding, Mapuche community tourism, sport fishing, rafting, kayaking, golf, mountain biking and camping. In winter, from June to August, there is snow at Chapelco and Cerro Bayo. Carry chains for the car and drive carefully.
