What to do
- Exploring the town: the Pablo Fierro Museum, the Molino Machmar Art Center and the sculpture of Princess Licarayén on the waterfront. The German heritage shows in the architecture and the food.
- Lake Llanquihue: is the area's great attraction and can be seen from the whole waterfront.
- Climbing Osorno volcano: with a guide, leaving at 5:00 from Puerto Varas. The ascent takes 5 to 7 hours and the descent 3 to 5. On the glacier they provide crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe.
Be careful with Osorno
The ascent is very demanding and is not suitable for those without physical preparation or previous mountain experience. You need technical clothing, sun protection and warm layers even in summer, and should book certified guides in advance, especially in high season.
